Q: Juan, I’m planning to redo my yard and am looking for some design tips. I want to do the work myself. Can you provide some resources to help? A: That sounds like a wonderful project. I’d recommend visiting yardtopia.com for inspiration, and tips on design and planning. Check out its SimplyScapes visual designer tool. You can upload a photo of your yard and create a design in minutes, adding plants, groundcover and even

furniture. Go to IRWD.com/landscape to browse our garden gallery or search for plants. If you decide to hire a professional, you can find a list of local landscape design companies there, too.

California native corner Juan’s March plant: island snapdragon

Island snapdragon ( Gambelia speciosa ) is a perennial shrub or vine-like plant native to the Channel Islands. Plant it as a hedge, a groundcover, on a trellis or in containers. Its trumpet- shaped red flowers attract pollinators, and it grows quickly with easy care. It blooms best in full sun but prefers partial shade when planted inland. Water it just once or twice a month in the summer. The “firecracker” variety is especially popular.
