Figure 6-2: GWRS Final Expansion Overview
The GWRSFE is anticipated to be completed and operational in 2023. Once completed, the GWRS will recycle 100 percent of OC San’s reclaimable sources and produce enough water to meet the needs of over one million people.
6.5 CONJUNCTIVE USE PROGRAMS
The conjunctive use of surface and groundwater has been the foundation of OCWD’s basin management strategy since it was formed in 1933. OCWD Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) program began in 1936 when it began purchasing portions of the Santa Ana River channel, eventually acquiring six miles of the channel in Orange County, in order to maximize the recharge of river water to the basin. Recharge of imported water began in 1949 when OCWD began purchasing Colorado River water from MWD. In 1958, OCWD purchased and excavated a 64-acre site one mile north of the Santa Ana River to create Anaheim Lake, OCWD’s first recharge basin. Today OCWD operates a network of 25 facilities that recharge an average of over 230,000 acre-feet per year.
