Basin Description
Approximately 46% of IRWD’s overall supply comes from local groundwater wells in the Orange County Groundwater Basin (Basin or Basin 8-1), and the Irvine and Lake Forest sub-basins. IRWD is an operator of groundwater-producing facilities in both the main Basin and sub-basins. The Orange County Water District (OCWD) manages the areas of the Basin that are located within the OCWD boundary under the Orange County Water District Act, Water Code App., Ch 40 (Act). The majority of the groundwater rights of the producers within the Basin have not been adjudicated. The Basin is managed by OCWD for the benefit of municipal, agricultural, and private groundwater producers. OCWD is responsible for the protection of water rights to the Santa Ana River in Orange County as well as the management and replenishment of the Basin.
